Rent a Friend
Synopsis
Rent-A-Friend follows Bennett, a professional “rent-a-friend” hired by lonely Elias to play the part of an old buddy at his impressive friend Tatiana's party. As Bennett coaches Elias through the small, useful lies of self-presentation, two other guests, Diana and Tommy, a married couple barely holding it together, work hard to keep up appearances of their own.
Over a single night of polite performance, the film asks how much of ourselves we will rewrite to be liked, and what is left of us when the act finally drops.
Diana is a debut novelist, ambitious and quietly furious, trying to hold her composure in front of friends while her marriage cracks underneath. Playing her meant living in the contradictions: wanting to be seen, terrified of being judged, defending her work and her marriage in the same breath.
